RSS Feeds

Today’s Web has many things to offer and most of us try to spend some time going through a number of different sites gathering as much information as we can from them. As the list of sites you visit grows, the amount of time needed to go through these sites increases exponentially. Surely there is a better way of consolidating information for easy perusal?

The answer is RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication. There are programs such as Feedreader, Sharpreader and web based versions such as Bloglines, that allow you consolidate all RSS feeds into a single program. Anyone familiar with newsgroups will find this new scheme of keeping up with your favorite websites very easy to learn and use.

DejaNews revolutionized the way Newsgroups were read and contributed to by providing a web interface. Google Groups picks up where Deja left off.

Today, many websites that provide dynamic content syndicate their information. Most of them use RSS. A prime example of a site, is the one you are reading right now. :) But others include Wired, CNet, Yahoo! News. The list of sites is not limited to just those providing technology or general news, but also Blogs.

Looking at the bottom right-hand side below the menu you will see a RSS button. This will point to the URL on my site that allows me to syndicate my posts. You would take that URL and post it into any of the various RSS readers out there and it would subscribe to my website. Now, every time I update my blog, you get the post in your RSS reader without having to actively browse to my site. Cool, huh? :)

Be sure to give these programs a try and keep up with my site.

Cheers
