Safe Haven Law
After a rash of infants and new born babies being abandoned in Massachusetts, the Safe Havens Law was finally adopted to allow parents to leave their children at police stations, fire houses and other federal buildings in safety and have an assurance that the child will be placed in the hands of caring people.
Before this law went into effect, parents that abandoned their children could be held legally responsible for those actions. This resulted in the abandonment of children in extremely risky manners that essentially guaranteed their death.
The fact that people incapable of supporting children are getting pregnant is point for an entirely different discussion.
